By the time of the Covid-19 pandemic, DEG had experience in realising that Walgett ACCOs should stand up and lead in order for our community to be protected and ready to respond to emergencies. Walgett is at the Climate Change frontline, regularly experiencing floods, violent storms and food and water insecurity. We have the relationships to source the facts and the knowledge that emergency response agencies for various reasons, do not act quickly enough and in the best interests of our community. We also know the ingredients for effective community communications. DEG needed to communicate health safety messages to our community. Once we realised that, we began rolling out messaging with our available resources, while providing other vital frontline emergency responses.
